Alzheimer’s Disease Death Toll Higher Than Thought – WebMD

The number of people who die from Alzheimer’s disease may be five times higher than previously thought, researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago say. Read more at WebMD.

I am glad to see this study and I agree that there is an under-reporting of Alzheimer’s Disease or one of the other forms of dementia that contribute to death. The fact that this makes Alzheimer’s Disease the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA is earth shaking! It is a fatal disease that has no cure, no adequate treatment and nothing to slow the progression of the disease significantly. I guess it is going to take all of us putting pressure on Washington D.C. to recognize and respond with the appropriate funding to battle this devastating disease.

Blood Test May Have Power to Predict Alzheimer’s – WebMD

http://www.webmd.com Sun, 09 Mar 2014 20:15:09 GMT

SUNDAY, March 9, 2014 (HealthDay News) — A blood test has been developed that can predict with 90 percent certainty whether a senior will suffer from dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease within the next few years, researchers report.

This is exciting but I must caution you that this is a very small study and very preliminary, but certainly offers hope. More studies with larger groups will need to be done and a cause and effect link will have to be determined before drug companies will consider looking at developing drugs to improve the levels of these 10 fats found to be low in individuals that later went on the develop dementia.

A compound commonly found in fruit and vegetables, including apples, grapes and strawberries, has been found to prevent Alzheimer’s disease in mice (Photo: Shutterstock). Alzheimer’s disease represents the most common

Now keep in mind, this study was done in mice, but it is very interesting. I have always advocated for good intake of fruits and vegetables, so now might be a good time to eat things such as strawberries, grapes and apples. I am not surprised that it is an antioxidant, fisetin, that is responsible for this. The role of antioxidants in battling cancer and many other diseases are well documented, so I will follow with great interest in this research.

A Visionary Approach to Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

http://www.primaryissues.org Tue, 11 Mar 2014 12:00:50 GMT

You can scientifically define Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain’s nerve cells resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills that interferes with daily life. [1] This

Quite simply, the lens of the eye gets protein deposits in it that can be used to help diagnose and follow the progression of dementia by the amount of this protein found in the lens with this device called SAPPHIRE II. This is going to change the way dementia is diagnosed and monitored.
